Health Insurance Coverage Information

As part of national health care reform, almost all Americans are required to have health insurance as of Jan. 1, 2014 or risk a tax penalty. The goal is to make coverage more available and affordable for those who do not have health insurance or have limited coverage.

Individuals and families may either qualify for private insurance coverage available through health insurance exchanges or for state-sponsored Medicaid coverage.

Private insurance coverage
Open enrollment for private insurance coverage is currently closed, except for people who experience certain qualifying life events. The health insurance marketplace for Alaska will reopen November 15, 2014 to enroll those who would like to purchase coverage for 2015.

Medicaid coverage
If you qualify for Medicaid, you may apply at any time throughout the year. Click here to go to the Alaska Medicaid website.
