Safe Kids Alaska, FedEx and local children join together on International Walk to School Day, Wednesday, Oct. 8

Nearly 800 schools nationwide to participate in Safe Kids and FedEx-sponsored
Walk to School Day Events

ANCHORAGE, AK Safe Kids Alaska and FedEx volunteers will join Anchorage students at Wonder Park Elementary School to celebrate International Walk to School Day on Oct. 8. The activities are designed to help educate children and families about the importance of pedestrian safety. Volunteers will walk to school with students and serve as crossing guards to encourage safe pedestrian behavior, promote driver awareness of pedestrians and educate students regarding the importance of reflective clothing.

Who: Safe Kids Alaska State Coalition; Dale Shaw, Fed Ex; and Ed Graff, Anchorage School District

What: Safe Kids Alaska, FedEx, Wonder Park Elementary School staff and parents, community leaders from Anchorage School District, Providence Alaska Medical Center, Alaska Injury Prevention Center, Anchorage Fire Department and Anchorage Police Department will walk with children at Wonder Park Elementary School to advocate for safer walking environments for children during the 15th annual International Walk to School Day on Oct. 8. Volunteers will walk to school with students to encourage safe pedestrian behavior, promote driver awareness of pedestrians and educate students regarding the importance of reflective clothing.

According to the World Health Organization, road traffic injuries are the second-leading cause of death among children ages 5 to 14 worldwide. On average 54 children are killed or injured every day severely enough to seek medical attention and almost 500 children are killed every year in the United States. Safe Kids Alaska and FedEx are working together to raise awareness, promote pedestrian safety and create safer routes for walking and bicycling.

Interviews will be available with a Safe Kids Alaska representative to talk about pedestrian safety and winter visibility tips for children and parents.
