Why Choose Providence
Providence Health & Services Alaska’s long history of serving the state dates back more than 100 years to the Gold Rush when the Sisters of Providence brought health care to Nome. Today, Providence continues that mission of service by providing Alaskans with health care offered nowhere else in the state. Among our unique services are Alaska's only children's hospital and the only Level III Newborn Intensive Care Unit. We also provide treatments and technologies available only at Providence Alaska Medical Center. Here are some of the reasons why Alaskans are choosing Providence:
Level II Trauma Center
Providence Alaska Medical Center is a Level II Trauma Center, a verification from The American College of Surgeons that ensures clinicians are available at all times to provide care to trauma patients. As a Level II Trauma Center, PAMC is a hub for trauma patients coming from outlying areas across Alaska. The hospital has received this verification for both adults and children.

Children’s Emergency Care
In a medical emergency, a child’s needs are different than an adult’s, which is why we offer a space designated for the care of children. Children’s Emergency Care is staffed by physicians and nurses who have the experience to handle any type of pediatric emergency. The space includes 13 private treatment rooms designed to provide a comforting environment where children and families can receive the care they need, when they need it. We are the only children’s emergency care facility in Alaska that’s connected to a children’s hospital.
Providence Maternity Center
Alaska’s most advanced and comprehensive maternity center is designed to provide all aspects of maternity care. The Providence Maternity Center includes Labor & Delivery, Newborn Intensive Care Unit, Prenatal Unit and Mother-Baby Unit.
Newborn Intensive Care Unit
The Children’s Hospital at Providence provides Alaska's only Level III Newborn Intensive Care Unit. The NICU offers compassionate care to our smallest patients. The Level III NICU is the only place in Alaska equipped to care for newborn infants who are extremely premature, critically ill or require surgery.
Maternity Center Prenatal Unit
The Children’s Hospital at Providence is Alaska's provider of most advanced prenatal hospital care in the state. This special care is for women experiencing high-risk pregnancies. A full staff of specially trained nurses provides close watch for both mother and unborn baby.
Maternity Center Lactation Program
The Children’s Hospital at Providence offers a full-service lactation program, providing inpatient and outpatient support with a full range of support products through our women’s boutique.
Providence Cancer Center
Our dedicated Cancer Center provides the most comprehensive services in one location and available nowhere else in the state. Patient and family navigation are offered at no cost to ensure seamless coordination of care. Our radiation oncology technologies include high-dose rate Brachytherapy, Tomotherapy and Cyberknife. Our oncology rehabilitation program is dedicated for cancer patients, and we provide a greater number of clinical trials for oncology patients than any other hospital in Alaska.
Providence offers the most comprehensive behavioral health services in the state. At Providence Alaska Medical Center, we provide the only psychiatric emergency department in Alaska along with a full range of inpatient and outpatient adult and adolescent behavior health services. This includes treatment for chemical dependency, a crisis recovery center to avoid acute care admission and an adolescent girls’ residential treatment center.
Visionary imaging technology - Hybrid OR
Physicians will now be able to conduct minimally invasive procedures on this new system to treat a wide range of clinical problems including coronary artery disease – a leading cause of heart disorders in the U.S. These catheter-based procedures may reduce the risks and recovery time found in traditional surgical approaches. The benefits of catheter-based interventions include shorter hospital stays, reduced recovery time without the pain of a large incision, and less visible surgical scarring.
Electronic Intensive Care Unit (eICU)
This program provides a second set of eyes to watch over critically ill patients in our intensive care unit. The eICU combines early warning alerts and remote monitoring technology to connect off-site critical care specialists with patients and their bedside teams. This technology is proven to reduce medical complications and improve outcomes. The eICU on the Providence Alaska Medical Center campus watches over patients at PAMC and at partner hospitals across the state, including Kodiak, Seward, Valdez, Juneau, Soldotna and Homer.
Providence "Puff-Ins" Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program provides education and exercise for patients and their families with obstructive pulmonary disease. It is one-of-a-kind in Alaska.
Providence Imaging Center
Providence Imaging Center is the first designated Breast Imaging Center of Excellence in Alaska. Providence Imaging Center offers the only integrated PET-CT scanner in Alaska that has 50% less radiation with the shortest scan times, the highest resolution and highest accuracy. The PET-CT is the only scanner that is accredited in both brain and oncology applications. Providence Imaging Center is accredited in all its Anchorage service offerings, including 3D mammography, ultrasound guided breast biopsy, stereotactic guided breast biopsy, four subspecialties of ultrasound, five subspecialties of MRI, PET-CT and CT.
Providence offers palliative care to help patients and their families live as fully as possible when facing a life-threatening illness. Unlike hospice care, which focuses on end-of-life, palliative care services are provided during any phase of an illness, including active treatments such as chemotherapy. It addresses physical, intellectual, emotional, social and spiritual needs and facilitates patient autonomy, access to information and choice.
Providence provides emotional and spiritual support for patients and their families of multiple faith traditions with respect to all personal and cultural beliefs, religious background and spiritual practices. Chaplains are available 24 hours a day to serve as a source of encouragement, exploring questions of meaning and purpose, and offering comfort and assistance in discerning important decisions.
