Children’s Emergency Care

24 hours a day, 7 days a week

If your child is injured or becomes suddenly ill, you want the best care right away. Children’s Emergency Care is designed to do just that and more. We not only provide the highest levels of care for every situation; we also understand that kids aren’t just little adults. They need special care to be comfortable in an emergency situation. No one knows your child better than you, and we welcome you to take part in the decisions about their care.

We treat more pediatric emergency cases than any center in Alaska, with more than 13,000 visits in 2018. But we don’t stop there. We add an essential quality — caring. We achieved an outstanding Press Ganey score for compassionate care in the Alaska region.

  • Focus on family

We work with you to provide the best treatment and most comfort.

  • Care that's about kids

As a parent, you can trust our dedicated team to take good care.

  • A unique approach

Our child life specialist helps ease your little one's way.

We are the first and only children’s emergency center in Alaska, and the only one in Alaska that’s part of a children’s hospital. Our association with Providence Alaska Children's Hospital gives us the resources we need to care for your child in any situation, from minor injuries to a severe illness.

Children’s Emergency Department Benefits

Level II Pediatric Trauma Center

This designation from the American College of Surgeons means we offer the entire spectrum of care for trauma in children. We’re the first center in Alaska to achieve this certification.

24/7 care

Our surgeons, operating room staff, anesthesiologists and emergency department nurses and physicians are available every hour of every day. Each one has the skills and experience to handle any type of pediatric emergency.

Thirteen private treatment rooms

These are designed to provide a comforting environment where children and families can get the care they need.

Board-certified physicians

All of our emergency physicians are board certified and have completed pediatric training.

Pediatric-trained nurses

Our nurses have completed the Emergency Nurses Pediatric Course (ENPC) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) training.

Family-centered care

We recognize and respect your family’s values, beliefs and cultural background. We keep you informed at every step in your child’s care and encourage your participation.

Certified Child Life Specialists

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends these professionals be available to help reduce anxiety in children and help families understand and cope with the child’s illness or injury. Our certified child life specialist works full time in our center. Learn more about the Child Life Program.

How long will the procedure take?

Examinations, tests and other procedures can be stressful, and it helps to know how long they will take. Each room has a wall chart that explains the average time for procedures such as X-rays, MRIs, CT scans and others. Your team will also let you know the time it will take to complete your child’s work-up.

Will my child be admitted?

Your team will keep you updated on how your child’s care is progressing and will let you know as soon as possible if he or she will need to be admitted into the hospital.

In addition to our emergency care, we can arrange for the following services:

  • Case management
  • Referral to a pediatric specialist
  • Social services
