Providence Emergency Stroke Care
Web-based Telemedicine - Time Saved Equals Brain Saved
Every minute counts when someone is experiencing stroke symptoms. Web-based telemedicine allows the consulting neurologist to get eyes on a patient within ten minutes. With the use of the new Web-based telemedicine service, a doctor specialized in stroke medicine is always on-call and ready within seconds to quickly and remotely evaluate, diagnose and recommend treatment options for stroke patients. In 2009, Providence became Alaska’s base hospital offering telemedicine based stroke care assessments statewide. Our Telestroke program allows neurologists to remotely diagnose and recommend treatment for stroke patients in rural, local, and remote areas utilizing Providence’s secure Telehealth infrastructure.
Providence Alaska Medical Center has partnered with several hospitals located within Alaska such as; Providence Kodiak Medical Center, Providence Valdez Medical Center, Providence Seward Medical and Care Center, Providence Seaside Hospital in Seaside, Oregon, Bartlett Regional Hospital, and Central Peninsula General Hospital to provide acute stroke care services to patients across the state.
From the Emergency Department throughout the inpatient stay, patients are treated by highly trained staff members that specialize in caring for stroke patients – from the neurosurgeons, neurologists, certified neuroscience nurses and rehabilitation therapists to the discharge planners that arrange for continued care and support even after leaving the hospital.
- Using Telestroke technology allows for even faster diagnosis and treatment recommendations. Time saved is brain saved.
The stroke program includes highly skilled and specialized physicians that use advanced techniques and technology to comprehensively assess and manage neurological conditions. Using technology and a dedicated group of providers and staff has allowed the Neuroscience Institute at Providence Alaska to develop collaborative relationships with vascular neurologists in a variety of states to improve access to qualified care for communities in Alaska and across the system.
